After That Night by Karin Slaughter (Will Trent 11)

After That NightSynopsis:

Sara doesn’t think about that night.

About the attack.

About the way it tore her world apart.

About the man who did it, now safely behind bars.

She thought that night was over. Until a new victim appears…

And now a young woman’s life depends on Sara uncovering exactly what happened after that night…

My Rating: 5/5

My Review: Will and Sara are back and unfortunately for Sara when she sees to a young rape patient named Dani Cooper she has no idea that it will unleash her own tragic past. When Dani dies from her injuries Sara is determined to get to the bottom of who was responsible having no clue that she would be directly in the firing line. She ends up testifying against Tommy McAlistair and soon realises that there are links between Dani and her own brutal rape many years before.

The end result is that Will along with his partner Faith go behind their boss Amanda’s back to try and get to the bottom of it all. This also opens old wounds for Will as he is faced with speaking to his Aunt Eliza whom he loathes but has to work with to help Sara. The story progresses with multiple moving parts and frankly I didn’t want to put this one down. This was pretty gut wrenching in parts but was very well written and I found myself just continuously turning pages and getting completely lost in the story.

Whilst the underlying theme throughout the book may not sit well with some people (sexual assault/rape) I feel like it was done well and as this is something that has formed part of Sara’s character over many years it is fitting to see her working through this element of her past. Overall another brilliant book which I thoroughly enjoyed

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter

The Good Daughter Synopsis:

But when violence comes to their home town again, the case triggers memories she’s desperately tried to suppress. Because the shocking truth about the crime which destroyed her family won’t stay buried for ever…

My Rating: 5/5

My Review: This has been sitting in my to read pile for some time and I decided to finally opick it up and boy am I glad I did. The story starts by looking back in time to the loves of Samantha and Charlotte (Charlie) Quinn. Their Dad Rusty is a lawyer well known around town as he defends murders and rapists , and their mother Gamma is very unique but a doting and loving Mother. What happens to the family on night years ago leaves their Mother dead and the two girls devastated and traumatised.

Fast forward nearly 30 years later and we see Charlie still living near to her father and working as a defence lawyer. Something bad then happens to Charlie and she is literally catterpaulted into a horrendous situation which not only affects her, but the town she lives in and the people living there. I admit the first quarter of the book I was trying to get to grips with everything going on but as each element of the story unfolded I became utterly absorbed in the book and literally couldn’t stop reading. This truly does pack a punch and seems to pack suspense, drama, fear, adrenaline and sadness all into one story!

This story itself is pretty complex but is done in such a way that you are completely invested in the characters and their own battles that emerge. I can honestly say this was an exceptionally good read and one that I finished and was left wanting more. I sincerely hope we get to see these characters again as they were quite simply amazing!

The Silent Wife by Karin Slaughter (Will Trent, #10)

The Silent Wife Synopsis:

He watches.

A woman runs alone in the woods. She convinces herself she has no reason to be afraid, but she’s wrong. A predator is stalking the women of Grant County. He lingers in the shadows, until the time is just right to snatch his victim.

He waits.

A decade later, the case has been closed. The killer is behind bars. But then another young woman is brutally attacked and left for dead, and the MO is identical.

He takes.

Although the original trail has gone cold – memories have faded, witnesses have disappeared – agent Will Trent and forensic pathologist Sara Linton must re-open the cold case. But the clock is ticking, and the killer is determined to find his perfect silent wife….

My Rating: 4/5

My Review: So having caught up with Will and Sara in book 9 I went straight on to book 10 and this one was no less graphic than the last. I personally love books that are dark and gritty but some may find the subject matter uncomfortable as rape and the depravity that comes with it is not in short supply here. It seems that the GBI have an issue at hand as a convicted rapist who is serving time in prison is claiming his innocence. Not only that but he is claiming that Sara’s dead husband Jeffrey Tolliver is responsible.

In all honesty you do need to have read the other books in the series for this one to have an impact. This feels like an unravelling of things especially for Sara’s current partner Will. When another woman is raped and left for dead, everybody soon realises that this is the same MO as the man currently serving the sentance for those historic crimes. This is a no holds barred book in both description and storytelling and isn’t for the feint hearted. That’s not to say the author is at fault as she has always said she will always write honestly about violence againt women.

The storyline drills down into the personal lives of Sara and Will too as we see them both struggling with Jeffrey being brought into the forefront of their lives. This book was as usual written impecibly with that dark and edgy style that Karin Slaughter is famous for. A great read and once again getting me prepped and ready for book 11!

The Last Widow by Karin Slaughter (Will Trent, #9)

The Last Widow Synopsis: She might be the first victim, but she won’t be the last.

Three…

A woman is abducted in front of her child.

Two…

A month later, a second is taken in explosive circumstances.

One…

But the web is bigger and darker than anyone could imagine.

The clock is ticking to uncover the truth.

My Rating: 4/5

My Review: It’s been a long time since I read a Will Trent book by Karin Slaughter and was looking forward to catching up with both Will and Sara. Having read this latest book I also realised how much I love both Faith, Will’s partner and Amanda his boss. The book starts with Michelle and her daughter being snatched following a shopping trip to the mall. Following a few weeks of investigation they find nothing it’s like they have vanished off the face of the planet. A few weeks after the kidnap Will and Sarah witness an accident which quickly turns into something much worse.

When Sara is snatched Will’s world literally turns upside down and he is left feeling bereft and absolutely determined to find her. This story is gritty and fast paced with truly despicable people at the heart of the case. I realised that I was truly gripped and wouldn’t put the book down until I had finished once I got through the first half. The second half has some very nail biting moments that had me wondering just how it was going to turn out.

I absolutely loved this book and it was a great way to get back into the series. I am just glad that I have the next book ready and lined up ready to read.

PIECES OF HER BY KARIN SLAUGHTER

Pieces of HerSynopsis:

But what if you don’t actually know her at all?

Andy Oliver thinks she knows everything about her mother Laura.

Until, in a moment of terrible danger, Laura steps forward into the line of fire.

Now, Andy must embark on a desperate race against time to uncover the secrets of her mother’s past.

Before they both run out of time…

Kat’s Rating: 3/5

Kat’s Review: I must say I am a huge fan of Karin Slaughter, whether it’s a part of her series of books or a standalone I am normally thoroughly absorbed with her books…until now! For some reason this book just rubbed me up the wrong way! The synopsis kind of gives you the idea as follows:-

“What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?

Andrea knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura”

Well all I can say is that by the end of the third chapter I wanted to slap the hell out of the character Andrea. She made me feel like she was a slightly spoiled and at times slow on the uptake woman. The idea behind the story was good and as the story unfolds flipping between the current time with Andrea and the past with her Mum I could see that the idea was a great one…for me it just wasn’t executed not because of the writing, but because I just didn’t particularly like any of the characters, To be fair the last quarter of the book was more well paced and things unfolded in a way that made you want to read more.

Sadly for me the dislike of the main characters was the first hurdle and I just couldn’t gel quite as well with the story and writing as well as I usually would with this author. Overall an okay book, but not one I would return to unless I literally had nothing left to read!

The Kept Woman by Karin Slaughter (Will Trent #8)

51DwTgfVf+L._SY346_

Synopsis: With the discovery of a murder at an abandoned construction site, Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is brought in on a case that becomes much more dangerous when the dead man is identified as an ex-cop.

Studying the body, Sara Linton—the GBI’s newest medical examiner and Will’s lover—realizes that the extensive blood loss didn’t belong to the corpse. Sure enough, bloody footprints leading away from the scene indicate there is another victim—a woman—who has vanished . . . and who will die soon if she isn’t found.

Will is already compromised, because the site belongs to the city’s most popular citizen: a wealthy, powerful, and politically connected athlete protected by the world’s most expensive lawyers—a man who’s already gotten away with rape, despite Will’s exhaustive efforts to put him away.

But the worst is yet to come. Evidence soon links Will’s troubled past to the case . . . and the consequences will tear through his life with the force of a tornado, wreaking havoc for Will and everyone around him, including his colleagues, family, friends—and even the suspects he pursues.

Kat’s Rating: 5/5

Kat’s Review: Something VERY strange happened when I started reading this book. So I picked it up, read a couple of chapters and put it down. This happened on three occasions and with many months in between picking it up again. For some reason I just couldn’t seem to engage, and then finally I just forced myself to continue reading. By the time I had got past those first few strangely non-engaging chapters (for me anyway) I was away as per normal. It was incredibly strange as I am a huge fan of this author, maybe I wasn’t in the correct mindset the first few times. However, I am so glad I pushed on through my initial reluctance as this ended up being another cracking book in this brilliant series.

Will Trent is a very likable character, as is his current girlfriend Sara. However his wife Angie is a different kettle of fish. I actually love reading about her but despise her as a character. However this time around she seems to be front and centre with this latest  story line. A dead cop’s body is found and when Sara, Will and his partner Faith and their boss Amanda are at the scene it becomes apparent that all the blood there is not from just the victim.

I absolutely love this series and it wasn’t until the story starts to unfold that I was reminded of just why I love it so much. Sara and Will are a good match but I love the fact that Will has SO many issues one of which is his evil and manipulative wife Angie. In addition I’m a huge fan of Amanda and it was so great to catch up with all of them. The story (once past the first few chapters) was full of pace and grit and its usual dark and disturbing content all of which made me totally an utterly engrossed. This was another cracking book in the series and I am looking forward to reading another Karin Slaughter book.

Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes by Karin Slaughter (Short Story)

518wujp7A5L._SY346_

Synopsis: A missing girl in the news reminds Julia Carroll of herself: nineteen, beautiful, blonde hair, blue eyes.

Julia begins to dig deeper and plans an article for her college paper. She becomes gradually more obsessed with the case, never imagining how close she herself is to danger.

Kat’s Rating: 4/5

Kat’s Review: First off the best advice I can give is to read Pretty Girls, which gives the basis for this short story featuring Julia Caroll, a 19 year old girl. It certainly was a short story and the 8- pages flew by, however I absolutely loved Pretty Girls and this was a fantastic short story to tie in with that book.

Julia is absent in the book Pretty Girls but this gives you a real insight into the character of Julia and how that ties in with the previous full length book. It certainly turned the pages for me but can only give it 4 stars as I am really not a fan of short stories, and felt this could have been built into the original book somehow. Still a typical ‘Slaughter’ style book and I would highly recommend the reading of Pretty Girls

Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter

514xf+5ZdqL._SY346_

Synopsis: With a missing girl in the news, Claire Scott can’t help but be reminded of her sister, who disappeared twenty years ago in a mystery that was never solved.

But when Claire begins to learn the truth about her sister, nothing will ever be the same.

Kat’s Rating: 5/5

Kat’s Review: After reading the first few chapters of the new Karin Slaughter I wondered what was going on. Although it starts with a very pacey opening, I just couldn’t get into it. This in itself is slightly unusual. However, having now finished the book I think Karin Slaughter decided that if she injected the same amount of terror into the start as she did at the end, her readers may not make it through the book alive!

First off you need to understand that even though this book is not part of her brilliant Georgia series, it is by no means any less compelling. It’s also not short on violence and degradation, so if this isn’t your thing you may want to give it a miss. If it doesn’t bother you in the slightest with fiction, you really do need to go and get yourself a copy as soon as humanly possible.

Claire Scott is constantly reminded of her sister who disappeared twenty years prior and was never found. However, her life now seems to be in perfect order with a loving and successful husband and more money than you can shake a stick at. Claire’s other sister Lydia no longer has a relationship with Claire and their lives could not be further apart. Initially Lydia was the character I was more compelled to read about, however when the story really starts to take a shift, Claire became just as compelling if not more so.

Although a slow starter, Karin Slaughter has once again written an absolutely outstanding book. I was literally on the edge of my seat and there were so many twists in the story I may as well have been on a real rollercoaster. There were times I actually held my breath, before realising I really wouldn’t make it to the end of the book if I did that. By the end of the book I realised that Karin Slaughter is quite simply a genius. This was without a doubt one of the most hair raising books I’ve read this year. It’s certainly a stomach churner (especially with content) but one that I wouldn’t swap for all the tea in China!!!! A MUST READ!!!!!

Cop Town by Karin Slaughter

226x346

My Rating: 4/5

Synopsis: Atlanta, 1974. As a brutal killing and a furious manhunt rock the city, Kate Murphy wonders if her first day on the police force will also be her last. For life is anything but easy in the male-dominated world of the Atlanta Police Department, where even the other female cops have little mercy for the new girl.

Kate isn’t the only woman on the force who is finding things tough. Maggie Lawson followed her uncle and brother into the ranks to prove her worth in their cynical eyes. When Maggie and Kate become partners, and are side-lined in the search for the city’s cop killer, their fury, pain, and pride finally reach boiling point.

With the killer poised to strike again, will Kate and Maggie have the courage to pursue their own line of investigation? And are they prepared to risk everything as they venture into the city’s darkest heart?

My Review: I was surprised to realise that this was a stand-alone novel by Karin Slaughter. I was also quite excited at the synopsis as she has gone for the same geographical setting but in the 1970’s. It features Maggie Lawson and Kate Murphy as our two main characters. It took me a little longer than her usual books to settle in, but I wasn’t surprised as this wasn’t part of a series that I had become familiar with over time. As police officers in the Atlanta are in the seventies things are certainly not easy on them. Karin Slaughter has made the book authentic and believable from the outset. I certainly realised very quickly that working in this line of work back then, was tantamount to being a wanted criminal.

Out of the two characters Kate is introduced as the new girl to the police force. With Maggie having experience as well as having her brother and Uncle on the force, she is naturally the one Kate looks to for advice. Maggie seemed initially like the force to be reckoned with but Kate developed as a character and by the end of the book I found myself hoping that Karin may well continue this theme on featuring both these women.

The main storyline features the Atlanta police force launching a massive manhunt for a killer known simply as The Shooter. There are some absolutely awful characters featuring in this story but I guess for that era they were pretty much the norm! What this latest Slaughter novel does is highlight the serious issues that were around back then such as racism, sexism and homophobia. That aside the story is weaved with intellect and keeps the reader guessing until the later part of the book.

Although I wouldn’t say this was my favourite KS book, it kept me intrigued with its setting, characters, story and pace. As ever she has shown how versatile an author she is and has given her readers another set of characters that they will no doubt want to see more of (I can always hope). A great read which I think many fans will be pleasantly surprised by.
